Black History Walks “Pull Up to the Bumper: Black Bodies on Trend” Highlights from UAL ACS Film and Literature Festival

UAL African Caribbean Society hosted Black History Walks Queen Nzingha Lecture 23: “Pull Up to the Bumper: Black Bodies on Trend” presented by Teleica Kirkland founder of the Costume Institute for the African Diaspora (CIAD) at London College of Communication on the 20th March.

The lecture provided a visual and contextual exploration of the changing dynamics between European fashions and the Black body as well as addressing the following themes:

• A burgeoning theory on the influence of the creation of the bustle as developed by Charles Worth circa 1840’s.
• The Black body shape that is acceptable in white spaces and is seen on the catwalks around the world.
• The self policing around the pervasiveness of the bottom amongst African and non African cultures

“You’ve got to do the self work – be clear in yourself who you are… and love you. Then it’s easy to unify.” Closing words from Teleica Kirkland.
